What do backup services include?
Having a backup on site and off site can be crucial to saving your company's data if something were to happen. A crypto virus, for example, can be a security issue that requires any lost files to be restored. Back up services ensure your files and information are ready and available if needed.

Having an automated backup system helps ensure your backups are up to date and not reliant on you or an employee to manually switch out the backup data. Leaving it up to a person leaves room for human error. More often than not, the manual switch hasn't been made and the backup data isn't up to date. Having an automated backup in place with daily status reports can make a huge difference in protecting your company's important information.
Knowing how quickly your company would need a data recovery can help you determine which data recovery services you would need. St. Louis Managed IT can assess your company's needs and help provide a solution that best matches your company's recovery timeline. St. Louis Managed IT is partnered with industry experts: Datto, Barracuda, and Veeam.
DATTO
Datto Backup Solutions-Datto solutions are based on your company's size. They determine the amount of servers your company has as well as the amount of data that would be backed up. They ensure a one-year data retention or have the option to do an unlimited cloud storage option. Datto is considered one of the quickest in the industry for data recovery. They allow you to recover the backup device temporarily while it continues to do backups as it's running. This allows employees to continue working until you can schedule time to fully move data to a new or repaired server. Datto utilizes AI to help distinguish any equipment that may have been hit by ransomware which allows them to not backup that device, so the most recent backup hasn't been compromised. Lastly, Datto can utilize the cloud for your data up to 30 days in case of a catastrophe at your company which can be a great option for your company's continuity plan.
BARRACUDA
Barracuda solutions makes their plans more based on your company's data needs. Their monthly services do include unlimited backups to the cloud but their services don't have an instant data recovery. This lends itself more to companies that would be ok waiting until the data is fully recovered and accessible. Barracuda does allow for more control of things like SQL backups and have instant startups for computers running VMware or Hyper-V. That being said, continued backups aren't included so if that computer loses power or restarts, all that data would be lost.
VEEAM BACKUP SOLUTION
Veeam uses a storage device onsite, at your company, to save any and all data. This device uses advanced security protection to ensure your data is safe. It then replicates the data to a cloud-based program to have an additional backup on the cloud. The cloud provider should then protect your data from ransomware.
Many companies use Office 365 or Google Workplace to store or share their documents. People sometimes think this form of "backup" is enough in case of a disaster/file loss. These programs often back up their own files but if your Office 365 were to become encrypted by ransomware, Microsoft and Google wouldn't help get back the data from Office 365. So one or more of your data sources may be lost. Having your own cloud-based data backup protocols in place can ensure everything is safe if disaster were to strike. St. Louis Managed IT can work with you to determine which programs and solutions are best for your company to ensure all your files and even emails are safe.
Out-of-date backup solutions
As cybersecurity is ever changing, company owners are tasked with keeping up with their security needs. This is usually pushed to the back burner, resulting in outdated practices and software. Using out-of-date backup practices can leave your data susceptible to loss or attack.
Tape Backup
Tape backups were used in the past by saving date to a tape cartridge. These tapes required someone to switch them out and take them off-site, leaving room for human error. Not only that but they have minimal storage capacity and most modern companies have large amounts of data and files they need saved.
External Hard-Drives
External hard-drives have been a popular data storage solution. But like Tape Backups, they require someone to manually save files to them and this sometimes is a forgotten task. Plus, if the external hard-drive is plugged in to the computer at the time of a ransomware attack, those files on the external hard-drive are also encrypted. If a computer crashed, the files can be moved from an external hard-drive to a new device but takes precious time away from your company as it is a more lengthy process.
